Study: Some Eco-Friendly Light Bulbs May Put Health At Risk

MIAMI (CBSMiami) Reporting Al Sunshine

Every time you turn on the lights, you may be putting yourself at risk, according to a disturbing new study.

Energy efficient bulbs are eco-friendly and can save you big bucks, but experts say that some could also have a dark side.

“When there is something in your house, you don’t perceive any danger, you wouldn’t get that close to an x-ray in a doctor’s office,” explained Miriam Rafailovich, Professor of Materials Science at Stony Brook University in New York.

Money saving, compact fluorescent light bulbs emit high levels of ultra violet radiation, according to a new study. Research at Long Island’s Stony Brook found that the bulbs emit rays so strong that they can actually burn skin and skin cells.

“The results were that you could actually initiate cell death,” said Marcia Simon, a Professor of Dermatology.

Exposure to the bulbs could lead to premature aging and skin cancer, according to doctors.

“It can also cause skin cancer in the deadliest for, and that’s melanoma,” said Dr. Rebecca Tung.

In every bulb that researchers tested they found that the protective coating around the light creating ‘phosphor’ was cracked, allowing dangerous ultraviolet rays to escape.

Homeowners expressed concern over the effect that the bulbs could have on children.

“That’s very unfortunate because the kids are getting exposed to so many different things at a younger age,” said Vicky Cobb.

As the federal government phases out the old incandescent bulbs in favor of more efficient bulbs like compact fluorescents, CFCs are among the choices of which bulb they use.

“Now that you’re telling me there’s a health risk, I really don’t think it’s fair that they would not sell the other kind of light bulbs,” said Cobb.

The compact fluorescent industry claims that the bulbs are safe, but admitted that they emit ultraviolet rays. The industry released a statement that said “the levels of UV radiation emitted are acceptably low,” and that they are safe under normal use.

Stony Brook researches advised that customers exercise caution and stay two feet away from the bulbs at all times, while storing them in an overhead fixture or lamp.

“Five reasons show why not to avoid all grains” by Hope Egan

Recently grains have been vilified: gluten is blamed for a variety of digestive disorders. Carbs are blamed for weight gain. And many people insist that soaking grains is necessary for good digestion. Is it possible that organic whole wheat is unhealthy? If you shy away from grains, here are five surprising reasons to reconsider eating foods made with organic whole wheat.

1. Whole grains may protect you against radiation. According to Technology’s Curse: Diet for the Atomic Age, nutritionist Sara Shannon indicates that a diet of 45% to 50% whole grains can protect you against low-level radiation and other environmental toxins.

2. Burdensome soaking may not be necessary. Many natural health devotees soak their grains, which was popularized by Sally Fallon in her best-selling book Nourishing Traditions. The theory is that phytic acid, a component of the wheat kernel, blocks important minerals from being absorbed and therefore must be soaked to properly digest them. In a fascinating article called “Phytic Acid Friend or Foe? The Soaking of Grains Investigated” Sue Becker exposes some obvious weaknesses in Fallon’s theory and makes a strong case for the benefits of eating bread from whole grains that have not been soaked.

3. Whole grains are the perfect food for long-term storage. Kernels of wheat found in Egyptian pyramids were able to sprout 4,000 years after being buried. In our day, people looking to store food for short-term and long-term sustenance should put organic whole wheat at the top of their list. While there is a small learning curve for learning to grind your own flour and bake your own bread, today’s small appliances (like grain mills and bread machines) make the process relatively easy.

4. Bread made from freshly milled, organic whole wheat could help cure the common cold. Most Natural News readers know that boosting vitamin C intake is important for fighting colds. But Nobel Laureate Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi discovered that unless it is combined with manganese–plentifully found in wheat germ–vitamin C is not fully absorbed by the body. You can buy wheat germ (which has been processed from the whole grain), but its most natural form is found in the whole grain itself.

5. Eating whole grains can help you lose weight. A study by Penn State revealed that participants in a weight loss program who ate whole grains lost significant body weight and reduced the C-reactive protein levels that lead to heart disease and diabetes.

Over the past century, whole grains, especially whole wheat, have been highly processed, genetically modified, and stripped of their nutrients; therefore, their nutritional value has rightfully been questioned, and they have likely caused many people to develop wheat allergies and sensitivities. However, since organic whole wheat meets nearly all of our nutritional needs (it is filled with vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein), we would do well to assess it fairly when deciding its role in our diets.

Healing with high vibratory frequency.

Our friend sent us excerpts from the “Japan, Radiation, and Spiritual Emergence” article by Rama Jyoti Vernon. We found these excerpts very interesting and would like to share them in our blog.

“Some of my Soviet colleagues were working with the children whose lives were shortened since the fallout of Chernobyl. They built salt rooms that looked like crystal caves for the children to remain in for a specified length of time. They used medicinal herbs indigenous to their region.  Yoga was a mainstay for strengthening bones, balancing the endocrine system and raising the blood count on those little beings dying of leukemia. Before Chernobyl, the Russian children had strong bones, strong bodies and thick lustrous hair. After Chernobyl, I was shocked to see the children with their wispy hair, weak limbs and alarmingly thin weak bodies.  Some children would be fortunate to reach the age of 15, diagnosed with illnesses of many names but all traced to the aftermath of Chernobyl.

A group of doctors and healers were having success with their groups of children. I inquired into what they were doing. They described the environmental conferences they held with their affected neighbors of the Scandinavian countries. They were concerned about contamination to the fish in their seas, to the grass-fed milk cows, to the lands, rivers and lakes. They were concerned about the air they breathed and the earth itself. They shared all of this, and then said they would tell me their secrets of offsetting the effects of radiation. I moved forward in my chair totally attentive to hear of a miraculous substance.

They told me that radiation is light and has a high vibratory frequency. Through their spiritual practices of meditation, prayer, Yoga, eating less dense foods and faith and love of God, they could raise their own cellular vibration to that of radiation to offset the harmful effects. They were smiling and even joyful.

“You see,” one Russian doctor bubbled with excitement, “We are using radiation as our spiritual guide. It forces us to be more fully conscious each moment of every day. If we have a negative thought it reduces the vibratory frequency of our cells and we become more susceptible. If we are angry or critical, our cells vibrate at a slower pace and we can become ill. If we become lighter, we become light and become one with the light of radiation. You see,” they beamed, “radiation is our spiritual practice.””

Radiation Warning

Today is 25th anniversary of Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine. INCE rated this nuclear accident Level 7 (highest) – major release of radioactive material; widespread health and environmental effects. The accident affected 7 millions people in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. Most of them still suffer from major health problem including cancer of different types. Children born from affected parent(s) suffer from poor health too. Nobody knows yet whether next generation is going to be healthier (if ever will be born).

Recently another tragedy struck the world – Fukushima in Japan. Initially this accident was rated Level 4 (minor release of radioactive material), but later it was raised to Level 7. While Multimedia and officials are busy discussing sameness and difference between two disasters the radiation creeps into western part of United States. What can be done to protect our health from it?

The radioactive iodine released into the atmosphere and water can cause a lot of health problem to people with iodine deficiency. And the iodine deficiency is very common in US causing problems to thyroid gland. “If there is enough inorganic, non-radioactive iodine in our bodies, the radioactive fallout has nowhere to bind in our bodies. It will pass through us, leaving our bodies unharmed. ” – Dr. Brownstein writes.

In order to maintain sufficient level of iodine in our bodies we need to take some supplements. Most common one is the potassium iodide. We suggest to read an advice from Dr David Brownstein on iodine and radiation exposure published in his blog (eight Japan Radiation updates).

Seaweeds are very good sources of iodine, including wakame, kelp, kombu, dulse, hijiki, and others. Roy Gibbon, the co-author of  “An Offering of Light” recommends the product called Tri-Quence from Scientific Botanicals, which you can purchase from Jonathan Wright’s Takoma clinic.  Each drop of this liquid product supplies 19 mg of iodine.

A good source of iodine is Modifilan, a concentrated kelp extract that not only supplies the body with organic iodine, also contains other trace minerals and fibers that help detoxify heavy metals, chemicals and radiation from the body.

Those who already have thyroid problems may want to consider trying Detoxified Iodine, which was created based on Edgar Cayce’s protocol for creating a safe and effective iodine supplement.

The bottom line is do not panic over the Japanese disaster. Instead use it as a wake-up call to make sure that you are doing all that is possible for maintaining your optimal health.
